RN/APRN RENEWAL EXTENSION
Nurses May Practice Beyond the End of the Renewal Period
Currently, DC Health is processing the renewal applications from RNs/APRNs who timely applied for the renewal of their licenses. The subject matters under review vary from vaccination or continuing education compliance to disciplinary history. It is possible that these reviews will still continue after the expiration date of June 30, 2022. However, when the renewal applications are approved, the licenses will be renewed and considered active as of July 1, 2022.
RNs/APRNs who apply for licensure by August 30, 2022 may be deemed to have possessed a valid license during the period between July 1, 2022 to August 30, 2022. During this period their licensure status will be "Expired - Renewal Eligible".
Nurses who have applied online by June 30th
may continue to work until their license has been renewed.
They may not work beyond August 30, 2022 without an active license.
Nurses who apply for licensure after June 30th will incur an $85.00 late fee,
but may continue to work until their license has been renewed.
They may not work beyond August 30, 2022 without an active license.

CHAPTER 40 - HEALTH OCCUPATIONS
4005 RENEWAL OF A LICENSE, CERTICATE, OR REGISTRATION
4005.5 A holder of a license, certificate, or registration who fails to renew prior to the expiration date may renew the license, certificate, or registration within sixty (60) days after expiration upon paying the required late fee. Upon renewal, the holder shall be deemed to have possessed a valid license, certificate, or registration during the period between the expiration of the license, certificate, or registration and the renewal thereof.
4005.6 If a holder of a license, certificate, or registration fails to renew the license, certificate, or registration within sixty (60) days after the expiration, the license, certificate, or registration shall be considered to have lapsed on the date of expiration, and the holder shall be required to apply for reinstatement and pay the required reinstatement fee, in accordance with the applicable provisions of this subtitle and the Act.

Board of Nursing Meeting
To ensure that business is on the agenda for the Board to consider at its next meeting, submit all documentation to the Board office no later than 4:30 PM ten (10) full working days before the meeting date. Submit agenda requests for consideration from the public to [email protected]
The full board meets formally every other Wednesday (on the first Wednesday of each month) except in the event of a scheduling conflict. The Board does not meet during the month of August. Special meetings may be called by the executive director or the full board itself.

The Board shall regulate the practice of advanced practice registered nursing, registered nursing, practical nursing, and nursing assistive personnel. The Board shall recommend for promulgation by the Mayor curricula and standards required for the approval of nursing schools and nursing programs in the District of Columbia.

This is achieved through the regulation of nursing practice and education programs; and by the licensure, registration and continuing education of nursing personnel."
The Board of Nursing, a division within the DC Department of Health, Health Regulation and Licensing Administration (HRLA), is responsible for the licensure and regulation of registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) (i.e., nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners), nursing assistive personnel (NAPs) (i.e., dialysis techs (DTs), certified nursing assistants (CNAs ), and home health aides (HHAs). The Board also approves and regulates the education and training programs of the health care providers listed above.
The Board newsletter, DC NURSE, is a communication vehicle to the DC Nursing Community.
The Board administers a rehabilitation program, the Committee On Impaired Nurses (COIN), which was established to monitor the practice of nurses impaired due to substance abuse or mental illness.
The Board has eleven (11) members, of which seven (7) are RNs, two (2) are LPNs, and two (2) consumer members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the DC Council.
